    MedComms Networking - 04 July 2023

    Hi

This week there's lots of chatter online on LinkedIn and elsewhere about freelancing in and around #MedComms. The new issue of the Medical Writing journal from European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) is all about freelancing. It's open access, so you can read the articles whether you are a member or not. Kudos to Issue Editors Laura Kehoe and Satyen Shenoy for pulling that one together. Read the full issue here.

My own contribution, The need for community: The importance of networking as a freelance medical writer, is hopefully useful to some readers simply because I was able to collect together details of a whole bunch of relevant networking groups that are being run around the world. I've not seen that done in one place before. My apologies if I missed any but let me know and I can still help spread the word!

Knowing this was coming, it seemed like a useful idea to run a #MedComms webinar on freelancing tomorrow, Wednesday 5 July. It's come together quite nicely and we've a big crowd signed up. We'll run it as an extended webinar, from 12.00 midday UK time through to 14.30. Register once and then come and go as you like.

Satyen will review the results of EMWA's newly published Freelance Business Survey.

Eleanor Steele and Charlotte Rooney will talk about how coaching or mentoring can help you craft a sustainable freelance MedComms career.

I've also persuaded three community leaders from across the globe to join me to tell us all about their own various activities and about the benefits of joining such informal networking groups. My thanks go to Lisa Baker (Freelancers in Pubs), Rebecca Tadokera (South African Medcomms Professionals Network) and Amanda Xiaoqing Mao (Asia Pacific MedComms Network). The time differences will likely confuse the heck out of me!

Importantly Eleanor, along with Vicky Sherwood, will then also answer lots of practical questions about freelancing.

After the formal wrap up at 14.30 UK time, we will happily continue answering questions for anyone with the time and inclination.

So, whether you are currently freelancing, aspiring to freelance or commissioning freelancers (or you're just plain curious) then I hope you will join us. See you there.

It has been widely reported this year how some freelancers have experienced slower than usual workflows and there has been much discussion around why that might be so. I've run a couple of public LinkedIn polls and posted the comparison here. Any thoughts?

Meanwhile, my unrelenting run of weekly Wednesday #MedComms Webinars now stops until after our Summer. Ideas for the Autumn series are welcomed.

If that leaves you wondering what to do next Wednesday, take a look at what Word Monster are doing. MonsterComm - Showcasing Digital Innovation in Healthcare is taking place in their unique digital 2D world. They say, "it's going to be a blast!". Join them to find out. All being well, I'll be there to see how they get on. See you there.

There's lots more coming. Stay well, everyone.

    Cheers
