    MedComms Networking - 30 October 2018

    Hi

First, a big shout out to Emma Bryant and the team at Helios Medical Communications who are now sponsoring MedComms Networking activity and also our FirstMedCommsJob services for the wannabes. Huge kudos to you guys. And indeed to all the current Sponsors. Without their help I simply couldn't do all this in the way we do it; making so much valuable resource so freely accessible to so many. And so much more is possible.

So another big shout, please, for John Dixon, independent medical writer and trainer in scientific writing skills. John's been very patient with me as we figured out how to provide useful tips for medical writers in MedComms (and others!). We think we got there in the end and our new series of "Writing bites" has just started appearing on NetworkPharma.tv and on our MedComms Channel on YouTube.

The bites are all brief videos, less than a couple of minutes each, providing useful tips for everyone and championing best practices in MedComms along the way. They're easily shared across social media channels and there's a long list of tips coming! I'm keen to hear your feedback. Can we take the same approach to other disciplines within MedComms?

The first three Writing bites are:

Keep your scientific writing clear and simple [1.39 minutes] View on NetworkPharma.tv] [View on our MedComms channel onYouTube]

Consider splitting sentences of over 30 words [1.44 minutes] [View on NetworkPharma.tv] [View on our MedComms channel onYouTube]

Keep subject and verb together and put lists at the end of the sentence [1.33 minutes] [View on NetworkPharma.tv] [View on our MedComms channel onYouTube]

Meanwhile John is leading our third workshop for wannabe writers tomorrow in London, Writing skills for medical writers: what MedComms agencies expect, so good luck to the class of October 2018! It was over-booked again, so we'll announce more dates shortly.

Last week we finalised the programme for a unique Meet the Publishers event we'll run in Oxford on 5 December, and this week I can announce a final programme for what should be another great event to end the year, in London, supported by Steven Walker and his team at Stgilesmedical. We've an impressive line-up of specialists talking about Optimising training for medical writers on 18 December, with lively discussion, mince pies and champagne included for free! Join us if you can, and please help spread the word.

On a final note, Derek Ho of the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) and Chair of their Getting into Medical Writing initiative (previously known as the Internship Forum), is keen to hear from anyone who could attend their event next May in Vienna to give a presentation or advice to prospective medical writers and company representatives who can be on-site to speak to applicants about permanent positions on offer. Email Derek at internship@emwa.org.

Enjoy your week. Remember, details of our activities are kept bang up-to-date at www.MedCommsNetworking.com or give me a shout at any time if you've any questions, comments or suggestions.

    Cheers
