    WEEKLY COMMENT

Every Tuesday we send out the MedComms Networking email newsletter to subscribers. It includes brief commentary on what we're doing and planning, and highlights relevant news to encourage sharing of information, experiences and ideas and to stimulate discussion. The text and links included below, by definition, were accurate on the day of publication, but may then become outdated.

    MedComms Networking - 20 December 2016

    Hi

As this year draws to an end I wish you, and every one of us, the very best for the next.

Thinking back on this year all I can think about is how my love for the digital world and social media was sorely tested. So much potential for accessing worthwhile information, so much opportunity to share ideas and experiences to mutual benefit, so much possible disruption of so-called traditional activities with their incumbent vested interests, and yet what happens? We shout and scream at each other using words most of us wouldn't use face-to-face and shut down connections with anyone who disagrees with us. Our personal echo chamber gets strengthened and amplified, reinforced by "tailored" news feeding a 24 hour insatiable need for reassurance that we're always right. Oh, and that we're beautiful/clever/cool/whatever. The levels of reciprocal stroking and narcissism now on display are frightening.

Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook apparently said, and I agreed, that "when you give everyone a voice and give people power, the system usually ends up in a really good place. So, what we view our role as, is giving people that power."

My faith, however, was tried and found somewhat wanting this year.

Read this on the BBC news site and weep - The city getting rich from fake news. What value, truth?

Too heavy? Too boring? Yes! This time of year is about lightening up and whilst I've a history of being grumpy at Christmas I usually start a new year very optimistic. All that potential opportunity to do interesting "stuff".

MedComms Networking will be 10 years old and we'll celebrate, hopefully in style, on 25 January when a large crowd will meet face-to-face. Sign up now to join us .

Before that our next MedComms Careers event is 12 January (please help spread the word amongst your own contacts).

I truly believe the launch of FirstMedCommsJob.com was one of the better moves this year. I'm particularly happy to announce that Ashfield Healthcare Communications and Oxford PharmaGenesis have added their support alongside existing Sponsors to help us realise that potential. Guys, me and the wannabes salute you!

Importantly we'll re-publish our annual MedComms Careers Guide in March. If you want your agency to feature then contact me quickly, as much of the available space has already gone.

Let's all do more to champion MedComms careers and spread the word, wherever we can. Kiley Brown, Project Manager - PhD and Specialist Programmes, wants to hear from anyone who can attend her PhD networking event on 1 March at Warwick University (there's no charge). Contact her directly on email kiley.brown@warwick.ac.uk and help spread the joy!

Enjoy your year end however you choose. I'll be asleep next week if I'm allowed, but back, hopefully on optimistic form, on 3 January 2017. Remember, if you've not booked tickets yet for ISMPP Europe the price goes up on 4 January, so move quickly and I'll see you there. Meanwhile, everything is kept bang up-to-date at MedCommsNetworking.com - always!

    Cheers
