    WEEKLY COMMENT

Every Tuesday we send out the MedComms Networking email newsletter to subscribers. It includes brief commentary on what we're doing and planning, and highlights relevant news to encourage sharing of information, experiences and ideas and to stimulate discussion. The text and links included below, by definition, were accurate on the day of publication, but may then become outdated.

    MedComms Networking - 16 February 2016

    Hi

I mentioned last week that membership of professional organisations amongst this specialist community seems low according to the results of our MedComms Barometer 2016. It is really just cost? The annual subs of ISMPP at 195 USD or EMWA at 130 Euros as examples aren't much compared with typical hourly rates within this community. The ISMPP webinars alone are worth a lot - albeit to people who specifically work in publications. I join such organisations in part simply to support wider educational and advocacy work done on behalf of the community which ultimately benefits us all. How else would that work be done?

Coincidently, last week Emma Hitt Nichols interviewed current AMWA President, Stephen Palmer and President Elect, Lori Alexander about their offerings and I promised I'd give a shout out for The European Association of Science Editors (EASE) and their next conference in Strasbourg, 10-12 June 2016. The main theme is "Scientific integrity: editors on the front line". They say "Now is the time to join EASE. If you join now, not only will you have access to all of the benefits of EASE membership, but you will also more than cover the difference in conference fees between the member and non-member rates. Save money and join EASE now!"

So, it is all about the money!

If you didn't get to the ISMPP Europe conference in January, Ashfield Healthcare Communications have published a newsletter report to help you decide about attending that next year.

Thanks also for the feedback about our new service at FirstMedCommsJob.com, but what I need now is content. Profiles from non-writers are particularly welcome, or volunteers to be interviewed by me. Or what about that company video you produced - but that you only show to yourselves and the Recruiters and new applicants? Why not show yourselves off to a wider audience?

Here in Oxford, 7.4 ran an Open Day at the end of last month and have now contributed a short report about their success, 7.4 Opening doors in which their Director, Matthew Evans, writes "we think it's vital that, as an industry, we continue to look for innovative ways to bring in high-quality candidates and develop their skills."

    Hear, hear to that!

By the way, last year was the 5th and final Annual MedComms Rounders Tournament and Family Fun Day at Alderley Park and a huge thanks to Ryan and Jane Woodrow of Aspire Scientific for organising those. We won't be running any more but it occurred to me someone locally might want to take the idea and run with it themselves. Let me know if that's you.

Have a good week everyone. How's this for a case of under-statement; Countdown to pharma disclosure in Europe - but cultural divides remain. Andrew McConaghie writes in pharmaphorum today that "Pharma is getting ready to disclose full data on payments to doctors across Europe for the first time - but big cultural differences across the continent will complicate matters." Hmmm, just a little..!

    Cheers
