    MedComms Networking - 08 January 2019

    Hi

Welcome, everyone, to 2019. Let's make it another good one for #MedComms folks everywhere.

So, how are you feeling just now? How's business? How confident are you for the year ahead? What can we do better?

Last week I launched our 4th annual MedComms Barometer and we've already passed 200 responses. I want lots more, please. You can view the last three surveys on our Surveys page.

These online surveys will always need to be interpreted with care. They aren't rigorous research, but they can still glean useful insights and provoke some feedback and maybe some discussions around various water coolers of one sort or another. Participation is on an entirely anonymous basis and the results will be made freely available to all, immediately after the survey closes on 31 January. Please help spread the word and encourage all relevant others to participate.

[PLEASE COMPLETE OUR ONLINE SURVEY HERE]

If you're a freelance medical writer, please also support the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA)'s Freelancer Business Survey (FBS) this month. Those survey results will be published in EMWA's official journal, Medical Writing.

Meanwhile, many thanks to everyone who came to London for our final meeting of 2018, hosted by Stgilesmedical, Optimising training for medical writers. Presentation slides and a summary report are now freely available. I think it's great that so many MedComms agencies are now taking training and development of all their staff, not just writers, so much more seriously. But it does seem to me there must be lots of "reinventing the wheel". And little cross-fertilization. Many agencies are clearly working hard on their programmes, but there's little information available publicly, and no obvious means of comparing and contrasting.

I hear a lot about training writers but not so much about the account management teams, so I was intrigued to see Bedrock Healthcare Communications launch their development programme, LEAP, Lead Excel Achieve Perform, which they say is designed to propel its Associate Account Directors and Account Directors into leaders of the future. It would be good to see more focus on that side of the business.

That's a useful segue into confirming the new edition of our annual careers guide, The business of medical communications: a guide to getting started in account management, is nearly finished and will be published shortly. To follow quickly on, we're now updating the associated guide, From academic to medical writer: a guide to getting started in medical communications, which is published in March each year. Let me know if you'd like your agency to feature in that.

Meanwhile, on Thursday lots of wannabes are joining us in Oxford for another of our regular careers events. If you know anyone who wants to join us, just point them in my direction and I can still sign them up. Remember, details of all our activities are kept bang up-to-date at www.MedCommsNetworking.com or give me a shout at any time if you've any questions, comments or suggestions. It's going to be a busy 2019.

    Cheers
